Originalmente, esta pequeña empresa londinense comerciaba con antigüedades, objetos curiosos y conchas marinas procedentes de Oriente. Las conchas se hicieron muy populares debido a que los victorianos las utilizaban para decorar cajas de bisutería, y pronto se convirtieron en la base de un rentable comercio de importación y exportación con el Lejano Oriente.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEn 1897, se confirió a la palabra Shell un estatus corporativo, cuando Marcus Samuel constituyó la empresa “Shell Transport and Trading Company”. El primer logotipo utilizado en 1901 fue una concha de mejillón, pero en 1904 se cambió por una cocha de vieira (o venera) como representación visual del nombre corporativo y la marca.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECuando la empresa “Royal Dutch Petroleum Company“ y “Shell Transport and Trading” se fusionaron en 1907, el nombre de marca y el símbolo de la segunda (Shell y la concha de vieira) se convirtieron en el nombre abreviado y el emblema de la nueva “Royal Dutch Shell Group”. Y así han permanecido hasta ahora.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELa forma del emblema de Shell ha evolucionado con los años, siguiendo las tendencias de diseño gráfico. El emblema actual se presentó en 1971. Cada una se basa en una melodía central que se puede expresar con muchos estilos diferentes, utilizando desde guitarras eléctricas agresivas hasta adaptaciones a la música tailandesa o turca. La expresión más breve es un sonido nemotécnico de dos segundos (la melodía principal) que, por ejemplo, acompaña al logotipo de la concha de la vieira al final de las películas de Shell.
